CALGARY -- The Alberta Hockey Club of the professional Canadian Women’s Hockey League announced Friday the appointment of Chantal Champagne as the team’s new general manager.
Champagne is no stranger to high level hockey, having been involved in women’s hockey for 20 years, including more than 10 in the high-performance area. She is a Hockey Canada certified Level VI official with national and international experience in the women’s game.
Among her previous roles are manager of the men’s national sledge hockey team and programs with Hockey Canada, including the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, when Canada won its first ever Paralympic gold medal at the Winter Games.
A former sport and wellness services director at the Talisman Centre Sport & Wellness, she holds certificates in Business Administration, Customer Relationship Management, Supervisor, Coaching and Mentorship, Marketing and New Media. Champagne replaces Calgary-based general manager Samantha Holmes-Domagala, who is leaving the GM role in order to have her first child. She’ll remain in an advisory capacity and work with sponsorship.
“We expect to have a quality team this season that should be able to compete each and every game,” said Champagne. “I look forward to helping the team build on the foundation from its inaugural CWHL season in 2011-12 and put Alberta in position to be competitive and challenge for the Clarkson Cup.”
Champagne, who hopes to have a coach in place soon, believes her education, leadership and past hockey experience will help take Alberta to the next level.
“My many successes are due, in large part, to my keen ability to effectively provide direction and leadership to the overall provision and delivery of strategies and business operations management,” said Champagne. “It has enabled me to harness the potential of all levels, empower and motivate various teams to many successes. In short, I move the organization forward.”
In addition to putting a coach in place, Champagne will take part in the annual CWHL draft, which takes place Tuesday.
